Amazon has blamed a technical error for its inadvertent exposure of some customers’ names and email addresses online, and says the problem has now been fixed. The online retailing giant maintains that its systems were not breached, and says it has directly emailed a notification to all affected customers.
Amazon didn’t say how many people were affected or in which regions of the world they live. But based on posts to Twitter from customers who received a notification, it appears that the data exposure at minimum affected individuals in the U.S. and Europe.
Amazon has yet to say whether or not it informed regulators about the data exposure. The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. But its U.K. press office told the Register: “We have fixed the issue and informed customers who may have been impacted.”
